The growth of real after tax income has been certainly in favor of the top 1 percent. It is shown that this portion of society has recieved a growth rate of almost 300% from the years 1979 to 2007, wheras the next group in line, the 81st to 99th percentile grew at a rate less than 100% over this same time period. The 1 percent are getting richer at an alarming rate as the rest of society struggles to increase their income growth. - Maulford Smith
At first I thought the article would look at how the income gap doesn't actually exist, and was waiting to see if the studies and data actually supported this point. I was surprised then when I realized the article was going to turn and argue the other direction- that inequality has in fact risen. I have often heard people argue that food stamps and government assistances to the poor are allowing people to be lazy, and not work hard. This idea made me feel uncomfortable, so therefore I was intrigued to see data backing up that, for most families, government benefits don't even allow them to live over the poverty line.

If we want to decrease peoples need for financial assistance in the future, make sure that all children have access to equal education—take away the importance of living in a different zip code. Now, someone forward this to Paul Ryan. I lost his personal information...
