Final Exam Take Home Portion

You will write two essays in response to two of the four essay prompts below. Essays will be 200-250 words long. You will use Times New Roman, 12 point font and 1.5 spacing. Each essay will be turned in on a separate sheet of paper. You will list the essay number (corresponding to the essay prompt number below) and the word count on each essay in the top right hand corner. You will hand write your name on the back (on each essay). You will turn in paper copies before we begin the final exam on Saturday, May 16. If I do not receive a paper copy at that time, I will consider the assignment late. The take home portion of the exam represents 1/3 of your total final exam score.

Essay Prompts
1) Use Gladwell to discuss Michael Lewis' experience at Salomon Brothers (or Michael Burry if you read the Big Short).

2) Compare/contrast Domhoff's power elite and the financial class described by Michael Lewis (in either book).

3) Compare/contrast American attitudes about inequality (from The Undeserving Rich) with the character of inequality in the United States as described by Massey.

4) Choose two authors. One must come from the group of authors we discussed at the beginning of the semester (Marx, Rand, Nietzsche, Steinbeck, Orwell). The second can be Domhoff, Massey, McCall or Lewis. They are in a meeting with the President of the United States in the Oval Office and are offering/debating inequality related policy. How might that conversation go? What would they recommend? Where would they agree/disagree? (Produce a script)

Friday class and make-up assignment

I will be out of town this Friday (April 24). In place of class, students will be expected to complete the following assignment:

1) Watch a movie in which inequality is a theme.
2) Comment on that movie here.

Students will receive credit for two comments and those two comments will not count against the five for the semester.

Have a nice weekend.
